DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH DIRECTOR DOCTOR SUE ENGLISH SAYS IT TAKES A VILLAGE TO WELCOME A HEALTHY BABY. WE HAVE TO GO TO COMMUNITY TO CONNECT THEM TO THE RESOURCES THAT THEY NEED, BECAUSE A SAFE PREGNANCY, A SAFE DELIVERY AND APPROPRIATE POSTPARTUM CARE IS A RIGHT AND NOT A PRIVILEGE. AS REED AWAITS THE ARRIVAL OF HER CHILD, SHE ENCOURAGES MOMS NOT TO BE AFRAID TO VOICE THEIR CONCERNS WITH THEIR DOCTOR. JUST TAKE CARE OF YOUR BODY. “I’m really excited this is my first so I’m really excited,” Dria Reed said. Reed is expecting her first child, but she’s aware of the dangers of childbirth.Black women are three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes compared to other women, but 80% of the deaths are preventable. Reed says the numbers are eye-opening.“Know your body, learn your body, learn your baby,” Reed said. “My doctor he speaks very fast and with a lot of doctors they will rush you if you don’t say anything so, that definitely is going to encourage me to speak up more.”“It’s important to be aware of the numbers because we do matter and we have to protect ourselves from certain things,” said Felicia Hill, Dria Reed’s mother.The maternal outcomes matter showers or “M.O.MS. tour” targets cities with high maternal mortality rates. Dr. Que English, the director of the Center for Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, says it takes a village to welcome a healthy baby.“The numbers have been increasing, Suicide is considered the leading cause of death for women postpartum 6 to 12 months,” English said. “We have to go to community, to connect them to the resources they need because a safe pregnancy, a safe delivery, and appropriate postpartum care is a right not a privilege.”The tour will make 10 more stops before concluding in Puerto Rico around Thanksgiving.
