Eye exams are a great back to school idea for students
Back to school essentials should include an eye exam.
As a parent, there are many areas of focus when it comes to managing your child’s healthcare needs. One of the most important — and often overlooked — is regular eye exams.
Eye exams play a crucial role in your child’s visual health and development. Newborns, infants, preschoolers, children, and teens can all benefit from early detection of vision problems. That means having your baby’s eyes checked shortly after birth to identify any congenital conditions, scheduling regular screenings for infants, and ensuring children and teens have their eyes examined at least once a year.
The good news for Ontario families? The Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) covers the cost of one comprehensive eye exam per year for eligible children and youth 19 years or younger as well as additional follow-up appointments as required.
“Many people don’t realize that OHIP covers annual eye exams for kids,” says Sumayya Yaseen, Registered Optician and Retail Partner at Specsavers Dorval Crossing in West Oakville. “We often meet people who are surprised to learn this is available to them.”
As the independent Optometric clinic, located in Specsavers Dorval Crossing, celebrates its one-year anniversary on August 19th, Optometrist Dr. Puka has voiced the importance of comprehensive eye exams to help detect potential sight threatening conditions.
“We include an OCT scan as part of the comprehensive eye exam at our clinic at no additional cost to patients,” said Dr. Puka.
An OCT scan (optical coherence tomography) is an advanced 3D eye scan that helps see what’s going on beneath the surface of your eye and helps optometrists to detect sight-threatening conditions in their earliest stages. Even if your eye health appears normal, an OCT scan can provide early detection of eye disease.
With school starting in September, many parents are facing rising costs — from school clothes and supplies to eyeglasses. Increased screen time among children also means a greater need for proper eyewear and consistent optometric care. To help ease the burden, Specsavers Dorval Crossing is offering several back-to-school savings:
- Back-to-School Promo for Kids: Two pairs of glasses starting at $69
- Myopia Control Offer: $70 off the already low $350 price of Miyosmart lenses — significantly more affordable than at other clinics
- Adult Eyewear Deal: Two pairs of glasses starting from $149, with an additional $50 off
- Seniors Eye Exams (65+): Covered once every 18 months
- Comprehensive Eye Exams with OCT scans: $99
