How Sydney Sweeney stays in shape, from exercise to diet
There’s no doubt that Sydney Sweeney has got it going on – landing roles galore (the latest being boxer Christy Martin) and as with most celebs we can’t get enough of, it’s pretty normal to find ourselves curious about how they maintain their seemingly effortless physique, or wonder what kind of lifestyle they live behind the screen. But remember, we all have different body types and nutritional needs, so while some things might work for the actor (who has also previously emphasised, “my body doesn’t define who I am”), they might not work for you. And you should feel no pressure for them to, or to look a certain way.
But, if you just want a little sneak peek into one of your fave celeb’s fitness and diet routines out of intrigue (and this may end up providing some inspo here and there), we’ve done a lot of the digging for you. Because, well, tbh we’re interested in Sydney’s workout regime too.
Plus, Syd is far from a supplement-popping, protein shake-drinking famous face, she really lives, and is the perfect example of balance, from her love of extreme sports to enjoying an ice cream in the sun.
What is Sydney Sweeney’s training routine?
Boxing
Given that she’s gearing up to play boxer Christy Martin, we imagine that Syd’s current training regime involves a lot of getting in the ring – in order to bulk up and grow some seriously impressive muscles (pictures of which recently got her fans talking on Instagram).
In a post the actor recently shared, she said, “I’ve been immersed in training to bring to life the story of an incredible woman – a true champion who fought battles both inside and outside the ring. Her journey is a testament to resilience, strength, and hope, and I’m honored to step into her shoes to share her powerful story with you all.”
A moment for Sydney’s guns, if you please. We already cannot wait to watch this film (release date tbc).
Pilates, pilates, pilates
The Euphoria and Anyone But You star recently shared an ‘insta vs reality’ style post on Instagram, giving an insight into her workouts. The first image features her all glammed up in her prom-esque pink birthday party dress, while the second shows her looking a bit worse for wear (well, if that’s possible for her), slippers on, hair ruffled, with a face that says ‘I wish I was in bed’, while standing in a popular US pilates studio.
The studio pictured is Solidcore, which describes its classes as, “a high-intensity, low-impact full-body workout on a pilates-inspired reformer. With the lights down and music up, you’ll find a stronger version of yourself by the first song change. Our core workout utilises slow and controlled movements scientifically designed to break down muscles (to failure) so they build back stronger.”
Syd herself has raved about Solidcore, describing it as “one of the greatest workouts you could do” and heading to the studios between two and three times a week.
“It just makes me feel so toned and strong, but also elongated, and I feel so good doing that,” she told Women’s Health.
If the picture of Sydney was snapped after the 50-minute immersive experience, we’d say she looks pretty good. Although it’s not her first rodeo with the form of exercise.
As with lots of actors, her workouts are also chosen to help prep for movies, and previously Sydney opted for Reformacore Pilates (a technique that “builds on the flexibility, strength and control and endurance of pilates”) ahead of her role in the upcoming film Madame Web, she told The Hollywood Reporter last year.
If you’re keen to give pilates a go, but don’t fancy such high intensity straight away (most of us aren’t in training for intense movie roles, after all), you can always build up from beginner’s classes – take a browse of these NHS guided videos for inspiration.
Sydney also said at the time that she’d been prepping for Madame Web with fight training, which brings us on to her next fitness love…
MMA
Yep, Syd is the perfect reminder that we shouldn’t be surprised a woman can love wearing pink and excel in physically challenging sports. And she’s had her fun with challenging these incorrect assumptions about her.
First getting serious about mixed martial arts as a teenager, she told Net-A-Porter in 2021, “I was the only girl at this dojo, and I wanted to f*ck with all the guys’ [minds]. So, I got all-pink everything – wraps, gloves, mouthguard, everything – because when you walk into the ring as a girl wearing pink, the guys are like ‘whatever’. But then, when you can kick their ass, it’s the greatest feeling ever.”
She added to Women’s Health: “I really wanted to find something that was as physically challenging as everything [back home].
“The dojo community is sisterhood and a brotherhood amongst the fighters and the trainers. It’s such a beautiful community of people who have each other’s backs, and you learn discipline and you learn respect.”
Sydney also told Kelly Clarkson last year her passion for MMA was partly born from her mum and dad telling her to fall in love with as many things as possible, and she certainly didn’t do this half-heartedly. “I trained with Ronda Rousey’s senseis. I did competitions and I got first place fighting all guys.”
But with her inevitably getting hurt in past fights, Sydney has had to cut back on this a bit now her acting career has taken off. “Unfortunately, you sign a little piece of paper that says you’re not to do X, Y, and Z. And I am all of X, Y, and Z,” she laughed.
She last shared a video of her “packin a punch” (as fans described it in the comments) on Insta in Feb last year, with the caption “missed this 👊🏼”.
The great outdoors
When she can, Sydney also keeps fit with an outdoorsy lifestyle. In August, the star posted a series of images featuring her goggled-up next to a dune buggy, water skiing with friends and kayaking surrounded by green mountains, with the caption, “wish you knew lake syd”.
And it seems she’s always been a fan of water sports in particular. Explaining why she chose to partner with Frankies Bikinis, she told Elle in May, “I grew up on the water, always running around in a bikini. If I wasn’t swimming in the lake or the ocean, I was skiing or attempting to surf.”
She added to Women’s Health that she genuinely is a real water baby: “The moment I could walk, my mom put me on what’s called a U-board to learn how to ski. I’ve been doing it as long as I can remember. It’s my favourite.
“You get tired really fast. I see such a change in my body after an entire summer of [skiing]. My arms are stronger, more sculpted. My abs are rock solid.”
And it’s not just waterskiing that Sydney is stellar at. The multi-talented actor was even ion a snow skiing team when she was growing up.
“It’s just me in the snow, and I can hear myself,” she says. “It’s nice, and you can just zone out there.”
Plus, her dog Tank helps her stay in shape, with the pair often hiking. “I try to take my dog on a walk twice a day. We’ll do a 2-mile walk in the morning and again at night if I can. If I’m feeling really motivated, I’ll run. If I have an hour, I’ll do a workout video at home, like a DOGPOUND one. Sometimes it’s hard if I’m missing equipment, but it’s doable,” she previously told Bustle.
What is Sydney Sweeney’s diet like?
Hydration is key
All glowing stars will tell you they drink lots of water. Yes, while staying hydrated isn’t all you need to do to stay healthy, it is a pretty simple solution for glowing skin and keeping your mental and physical performance at its best. Six to eight glasses a day, if you can.
“I have never even tried coffee. I only drink water — for whatever reason, when I was like, 12, I decided I would only drink water and I just stuck with it. I love water, it’s my thing,” she added.
And by the looks of it, she’s stuck to that, promoting the flavoured water drink ‘Bai’ all over her socials (it’s “hydration that works” – antioxidant infused and contains 1g of sugar and no artificial sweeteners, apparently).
Balance
While she may avoid coffee (and alcohol, as she’s said elsewhere), Sweeney doesn’t limit herself too much (and definitely has a sweet tooth).
“Don’t get me wrong — I eat sugar, so it balances out. Instead of coffee, I’ll have some Swedish Fish or anything gummy if I’m tired,” she also told Bustle. “I’ve had a Shirley Temple to celebrate, but I feel totally fine with just water.”
She’s also previously posted pictures with ice cream with the caption “icecream is the way to my ❤️ (& cookies)” (she’s also literally eating ice cream in her recent Variety magazine cover), and with pizza, writing “busted eating 3 pizzas”.
Opening up on her favourite comfort foods, she told People in June, “I love Kraft mac and cheese and hot dogs – those were childhood staples,” she said.
“Sometimes I’ll find myself making hot dogs and mac and cheese on a late night and watch a movie.”
Obviously, Sydney won’t be eating nothing but pizza, hot dogs, and ice cream all day every day, but it’s nice to be reminded we can have balance in what we eat, and there’s no need to restrict anything, unless you’ve been advised to by a doctor.
A changing palette
As with everything mentioned above, how she eats and exercises will differ, but at one point she had perfected her breakfast routine. “It changes, but I like to start the day with berries. Right now, I’m really into this croissant toast that I eat with cinnamon sugar and honey butter,” she told Bustle at the time.
And there’s no doubt that Syd is a foodie. “I’m really into truffles. I went to Oak Tuscan Truffle Lounge here in New York and I had a truffle burger, truffle spaghetti, truffle roasted potatoes, and a truffle dessert…it was the most amazing meal. I’d recently gotten into truffle meats and cheeses, and this meal took it to a whole new level,” she told Story + Rain.
“But it started with my favourite restaurant in California, Wally’s. They have this amazing meat and cheese platter. In the past year I’ve opened up to food. I used to be a really picky eater, and for whatever reason my palette has changed and I’m really into food now. So I’ve been trying a lot of things, and truffles have really stuck with me.”
We wonder what her faves are now? And here’s hoping the Euphoria star gets to do some more (injury-free) MMA ASAP.
